The Sierra is covered with oak, pine and chestnut forests and is an ideal area for hiking. Cold clear water runs through rivers, streams and gorges. In summer it is posible to enjoying a swim in amazing natural pools. In the plains around the Tietar river tobacco, raspberries and kiwis are grown, also huge plantations of peppers are grown here and have made the area famous for its paprika. In the foothills orchards of fig, olive and cherry are grown on terraces creating a fantastically beautiful landscape.
The monuments and well preserved popular architecture means that some villages have been declared a Historic Artistic Site of national interest. Villanueva de La Vera our nearest one is one of them and showcases many good examples of oak beamed and adobe brick houses and a charming Plaza mayor. It is also famed for popular festivals an impressive natural waterfall and a very good cheese factory.
Other towns in the area that deserve a visit for their monuments are Valverde de La Vera for its architecture, Jarandilla de La Vera for its castle today a Parador Hotel, Cuacos de Yuste for its architecture and famous Monastery and Garganta la Olla which has several interesting monuments and is a good example of a truly authentic village of this region.
This is also a birdwatchers Paradise. Many birds can be seen from the cottage or the surrounding area and incredible colonies of birds of prey can also be spotted at Monfrague Natural Park nearby. A fantastic day out is guaranteed with a visit to the magnificent city of Trujillo which is just a short drive away.
